Hiking is not a walk in the park, literally. First-time hikers will experience levels of emotions during the actual climb. Getting to the top of the mountain takes endurance, strength, and having a sense of fun. Being weak and petty won’t last you even a quarter of the hike.

If you’re planning to go climb a mountain, you’ll be better off doing the following first:

1. Research how to get to the destination. This is especially helpful if you are hiking alone or with just one companion. Google for driving or commuting directions. List down at least two (2) alternative routes so you have options. Also, take notes on information on the available transportation, travel time, fares, food, and the remoteness or how urbanized the place is. Treat this as like you're researching for topics on your college essay. Scout for any possible information you need to get.

2. Get up early, very early. This is to feel the fresher air and less harmful sunlight.

3. Sport a backpack. Leave the shoulder bag or duffel at home. You will save more energy by donning a backpack or a messenger bag (for day hikes) as opposed to putting all the weight in one shoulder.

4. Pack up your vanity essentials in small sizes. Leave the big bottles at home. Bringing bottles will only add to the weight of your bag. Limit the necessities to basics. Shy away from bringing your makeup kit.

5. Pamper your skin with sunscreen with high levels of SPF. Follow the cardinal rule of applying sunblock at least 30 minutes before getting exposed to sunlight and re-apply after four (4) hours.

6. Bring at least two (2) bottles of water. This is to stay hydrated while climbing to high altitude. Plus, water can also serve as a soothing agent to drying arms or legs.
